Today, 29 July 2010, celebrates the living legend of the Greek musicians their 85th Birthday. Like no other Theodorakis is a piece of Greek (musical) history. His work and his biography, both of which are deeply influenced by the Greek story of his time form a unit. That is why he is in Greece perceived not only as a great artist, but as a role model and idol.
On 29 July 1925 Mikis Theodorakis was born on the island of Chios. He had matured during the occupation and the Civil War, when he had fought on the side of the left, the man, persecution, imprisonment and cruel torture suffered. 1967 Militärchunta of his songs were banned. In the underground, found them in the resistance against the dictatorship of expression. After the end of the dictatorship in 1974 could Theodorakis - returned from exile - at last with his people breathe, the celebrated him and brought him triumphant success. But the work of Mikis Theodorakis covers almost all genres, from classical chamber and orchestral music on stage and ballet music to choirs, oratorio and opera. He has taken up elements of Byzantine music and Greek folk music of different eras.
